Join a hike with our knowledgeable guides to traverse high mountain peaks, alpine meadows, and scenic valleys, where wildlife such as elk, deer, and antelope roam and colorful native wildflowers bloom throughout the seasons.
We tailor each hike to your preferences. Trails range from 2 to 10 miles, with difficulty based on elevation gain and terrain, so you can choose a route that matches your fitness and comfort level. Bring your favorite boots, a light daypack, binoculars, and a camera, and set out from the ranch on trails that are both accessible and breathtaking.
For those who prefer self-guided adventures, we provide maps and detailed trail information, allowing you to explore the Montana backcountry at your own pace while enjoying the freedom and beauty of the Ruby Valley.
History Tours
As a century-old ranch, Upper Canyon Outfitters is proud to share the rich history of the Ruby Valley. From the days of Native American camps on our land to visits by Lewis and Clark, and through the Gold Rush era, the valley is full of stories waiting to be discovered.
Guests will see firsthand the remnants of historic ranches and homesteads dating back to when the West was wild and untamed. Some structures still stand today, while others have faded into the pages of history. Our ranch, known as the Tate Ranch, has been in our family since our grandfather homesteaded the area, and we love sharing our heritage with visitors.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious about the authentic stories of Montana’s past, our guided tours provide a fascinating glimpse into the culture, legacy, and family heritage of the Ruby Valley.
All Terrain Excursions
Get ready to experience Montana’s ever-changing backcountry on our All Terrain Excursions. Sit back and enjoy the ride in our four-door All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) or choose a comfortable truck ride if you prefer a more relaxed way to take in the scenery.
Our guided excursions travel along backcountry dirt roads, gravel bars, stream crossings, and high mountain vistas. Discover wildflower-filled meadows, patches of snow in July, and keep your eyes open for elk, deer, and other wildlife along the way. Skilled guides share the history, points of interest, and local knowledge that make each excursion unique.
Explore miles of backcountry, including the Ruby River Road running between the Snowcrest Mountains and Gravelly Range, or the Gravelly Range Road, just 10 minutes from the ranch. From high mountain meadows and scattered forests, you can often see seven or more mountain ranges on a clear day.
For those who want to take the adventure into their own hands, we can arrange ATV rentals delivered directly to the ranch, so you can explore at your own pace with confidence and safety.
Horse Riding
IImmerse yourself in the spirit of the Old West with a customized horseback riding experience at Upper Canyon Outfitters. Our equine programs are designed for riders of all skill levels, offering scenic two-hour trail rides or full-day mountain excursions that traverse creek crossings, ridgelines, and expansive valley views.
Beyond traditional trail riding, guests can deepen their connection with these intuitive animals through Equine Facilitated Wellness (EFW) sessions. These ground-based classes focus on natural horsemanship and emotional awareness, creating a reflective, grounding experience that goes far beyond a standard ride.
Whether you’re seeking an adventurous climb to a high-mountain vista or a mindful afternoon bonding with your horse in the arena, our professional wranglers tailor each outing to your skill level and interests, ensuring a safe, personal, and unforgettable journey through the rugged beauty of the Ruby Valley.

For those looking to improve their skills, our experienced local guides offer hands-on instruction, from casting and knot-tying basics to advanced water-reading and fishing techniques. Prefer to explore on your own? We provide essential local information, hatch reports, and access maps to help you make the most of your day on the water.
