Guided Hikes
Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just like gentle strolls through amazing landscapes, the Montana backcountry that surrounds Upper Canyon offers a variety of terrain just waiting to be explored by foot.
Book a hike with one of our experienced staff to lead you through high mountain peaks and meadows where a diverse wildlife population and an array of colorful wildflowers native to southwest Montana thrive.
We’ll be glad to tailor a day out that’s just right for you. Hikes range in distance from two to ten miles, and difficulty levels based on elevation gain and loss so you can choose a hike that fits your fitness and comfort level. Just bring your favorite boots, a lite daypack, binoculars and a camera and set out on trails right from the ranch. We also provide maps and information on area trails for those times you just want to head off on your own.
History Tours
Being a century-old ranch we not only are part of the history of the Ruby Valley we love to share it. The Ruby Valley has a rich history from Native American camps that were located on our ranch to Lewis and Clark then on to the Gold Rush days. You will see first hand the evidence of the ranches and homesteads dating back to the time when the West was still wild and untamed territory. Some of these still stand today, while others have faded into the pages of the history of the valley. Our ranch is known as the Tate Ranch from the days our grandfather homesteaded the area. If you are a history buff or enamored by the authentic history of the west our tours will give you a glimpse of the past with our family heritage and history in the Ruby Valley.
All Terrain Excursions
Get ready to experience the ever-changing terrain on our “All Terrain Excursions”. Sit back and enjoy the astounding ride in our four-door All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV). We will take you through backcountry dirt roads, gravel bars, stream crossings, high mountain vistas, finding patches of snow in July surrounded by wildflowers, and don’t forget to be on the lookout for wildlife. With our skilled guides at the wheel, they will share history, points of interest, and local knowledge. We have miles and miles of backcountry areas to explore. From the Ruby River Road that runs between the Snowcrest Mountains and the Gravelly Range which parallels the Ruby River surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The Gravelly Range Road is another amazing tour that starts within 10 minutes of the ranch. From the top of the Gravelly Ranch Road, you will experience high mountain meadows, scattered forest and on a clear day, you can view over seven different mountain ranges.
If you want to get behind the wheel of your own ATV we can help make that happen. We will connect you with a rental shop that will deliver ATV’s to the ranch where they will be waiting for you upon your arrival.
Horse Riding

Beyond traditional trail riding, you can choose to deepen your connection with these intuitive animals through our Equine Facilitated Wellness (EFW) sessions. These ground-based classes focus on natural horsemanship and emotional awareness, providing a grounding, reflective experience that goes far beyond a standard ride. Whether you are looking for an adventurous climb to a high-mountain vista or a mindful afternoon bonding with your horse in the arena, our professional wranglers tailor each outing to ensure a safe, personal, and unforgettable journey through the rugged beauty of the Ruby Valley.
