Upper Canyon Outfitters is a premier hunting outfitter offering guided and unguided hunting trips for both archery and rifle seasons in southwest Montana. Our hunts include elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope, moose, and mountain goat. Hunting trips begin right out the back door of the ranch, with access to the Snowcrest, Greenhorn, and Gravelly Mountain ranges within the Beaverhead National Forest, as well as nearby private ranches.

The terrain ranges from river bottoms and hay meadows to rolling sagebrush hills and high mountain plains. Higher elevations bring rugged ridges, deep canyons, scattered timber, and spring-fed basins with aspen groves — ideal habitat for elk and other big game. The ranch sits at 6,000 feet, with hunting elevations reaching up to 9,000 feet. With access to more than 800,000 acres of public and private land, UCO provides the space, habitat, and opportunity for an authentic western hunting experience.

Guided Hunts

Our guided Montana hunting trips take place across more than 800,000 acres of National Forest in the Snowcrest, Greenhorn, and Gravelly Mountain ranges. Our private land hunts offer access to over 9,000 acres of private ranch land with remote backcountry terrain. These hunts provide fair chase opportunities for elk, mule deer, whitetail, and antelope in some of the most productive big game habitats in southwest Montana.

Each guided hunt pairs one of our experienced hunting guides with two guests, spending each day on foot — tracking, glassing, and working resident herds through terrain that ranges from open ridgelines to dense timber and canyon country. Four-wheel-drive vehicles and UTVs are available when needed, but most of the work happens on the ground. Our guides bring more than directions to a trailhead — they bring years of reading this specific terrain, understanding animal behavior, and knowing how to adapt when conditions change.

UCO offers guided and unguided hunts in Montana’s Snowcrest, Greenhorn, and Gravelly ranges, including limited private ranch hunts. Our areas have high elk populations, allowing hunters to pursue bulls or cows.

Unguided Hunts

Our unguided hunts take place on the Beaverhead National Forest, right out the back door of the lodge, with hunting areas just 10 to 40 minutes away. Our great-grandfather homesteaded this land in 1910, and four generations later we still know every drainage, every ridge, and every area where game tends to move through the season. That kind of knowledge only comes from generations on the same land.

When you arrive, we introduce you to the area, share where we’ve been seeing game, and make sure you have the local knowledge and access points to hunt independently and confidently. Throughout your stay we’re always available for advice, updated sightings, and tips on specific locations. Guests also have access to a walk-in cooler and on-site shooting range. Game retrieval is available for an additional charge.
